UtterTag lets you share a link and reply to it with your voice. This page explains what we store, who else handles it, and what you can ask us to do with it. Questions go to uttertag@protonmail.com.

What we store

  • Your account: username, display name, email address and a hash of your password.
  • Your profile: picture, banner and bio, if you add them.
  • What you post: links, voice recordings, text replies, reactions and who you follow. If you turn on two-factor sign-in, we store what is needed to check your codes.
  • If you connect a streaming platform in Studio, the credentials for that connection, encrypted.
  • If someone invites you, your email address, any name they gave for you, and whether we sent the invitation or you unsubscribed.
  • Technical records: your IP address, used to limit repeated sign-in attempts, and server logs of requests, used to run and repair the service.

Why we use it

We use this to provide your account and show what you post, which is the service you asked for. We use technical records because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and working. We only send you email about your account, such as confirming your address or resetting your password.

Cookies and tracking

We set one cookie to keep you signed in, lasting up to 30 days between visits. Your theme choice is kept in your browser. We don't show ads or use advertising trackers. The usage figures we collect describe the service as a whole, such as request counts and memory use.

What other people can see

A share open to anyone can be read by anyone with its link, and its title and your display name can appear in link previews on other sites. Shares you restrict are limited to the people you choose.

Who else handles your data

  • Hetzner hosts our servers and database.
  • Backblaze stores recordings, images and encrypted backups.
  • Resend delivers our emails.
  • Adobe Fonts supplies our typefaces, so your browser contacts Adobe when pages load.
  • Sites you or others link to: thumbnails load directly from them, and an embed you choose to open runs that site's own content, under its own privacy terms.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and posts until they are deleted. Deleting a post removes it from UtterTag, but encrypted backups can hold a copy for up to 12 months before they expire. Server logs are overwritten as new ones arrive. If you unsubscribe, we keep your email address so we can make sure we don't write to you again.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, or ask us to correct or delete it, including your whole account. Email uttertag@protonmail.com from the address on your account. You can also object to how we use your data. If you're in the UK and unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Age

UtterTag isn't for anyone under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
